I ONLY HAVE TROUBLE
WITH PEOPLE…
who look at their passengers when driving. Now, I don’t even drive. Never have. Unless you count bumper cars and golf carts. (I’m not even good at that!) But I have observed drivers whose heads are definitely turned to the right while chatting away on the highway. I instinctively feel that when the driver’s eyes are not on the road, the traveling experience becomes more dangerous.
When conversing with another in an automobile, there is hardly any need to make eye contact. You know who you’re talking to. You know who’s in your car. It’s not as if you can’t keep up your end of the conversation unless you see the person you’re addressing. Most of us are not in the habit of using picture phones. If the conversation is so heated, that you feel absolutely compelled to look at the person, this is definitely the wrong place and the wrong time. As would be, being so in love that you can’t bear to take your eyes off of him or her.
I can only assume that the driver has, for the moment, forgotten he was in charge of 1000 pounds of steel …in motion…at high speed. This type of driver assumes this responsibility with way too great a deal of nonchalance. They should remember they’re not on a horse. Granted, a horse could present different problems, but at least, a horse could swerve away from a tree it may be steered toward. A horse could react in such a way it would not run into a person or another horse. One should be able to remember a car does not have a brain. And until someone invents an automobile that drives itself, the chatterbox driver should keep eyes on the road …and I promise never to drive.
